My Journey - Why I Created Mindful Mats

Hi, I'm Laura, and I created Mindful Mats as a way to share my passion for yoga, meditation and mindfulness. This is my story. It's a journey from the chaos of a constantly racing, stressed and reactive mind to the peace of a mindful, purposeful existence. For as long as I can remember, people would describe me as a 'sensitive person', which was both a blessing and a challenge. I felt everything very deeply and intensely, which was often overwhelming. On top of that, my ADHD (which was undiagnosed for most of my life) meant I was living with an often frantic stream of consciousness. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, emotions, and endless energy that seemed impossible to tame—until I discovered meditation and mindfulness.

It started as a series of practices a counselor gave me to help me get in touch with my thoughts and my body. At the time I had no understanding for why I was doing these exercises but it didn't matter. Like going to the gym and working a muscle, my thoughts began to slow as my awareness grew. Soon meditation and mindfulness had become my lifeline, transforming my frantic mental pace into a slower, more observant mode of existence. It was as if I'd been given a new lens through which to view my world, allowing me to connect with my body and mind on a profoundly deep level. This newfound awareness was a revelation; it enabled me to preempt the spirals and rabbit holes that had previously ensnared me, offering a sense of control and peace I had never known.

Meditation became an ever present part of my day to day but my passion for yoga didn't fully ignite until during the pandemic. This time of global pause and turmoil, for me, became a period of personal evolution. Having practiced pilates for years to alleviate back pain and build core strength, I found myself yearning for something that offered more of a spiritual mind and body connection, and the transition to working from home presented an opportunity to weave a daily yoga practice into my life. Yoga became the missing piece in my wellness puzzle, integrating the building of physical strength and flexibility with the mental clarity and observation I'd been honing through meditation.

It wasn't long before I became an outspoken advocate for yoga, sharing my newfound passion with anyone who would listen as I'd become so aware of its transformative power. It is that passion which led me to create Mindful Mats. I wanted to share the profound impact of meditation, mindfulness, and yoga on mental, emotional, and physical well-being. My belief in these practices is deeply personal, rooted in my own experiences as a highly sensitive and neurodivergent individual. I am truly convinced that everyone, regardless of their background or level of experience, can benefit from a greater awareness of their mind and body, nurtured through these ancient practices.
